What is an LPP septic system and when is it required?

A Low Pressure Pipe (LPP) system uses a pump to distribute effluent under low pressure through small-diameter pipes across a shallow, pressure-dosed drain field. It's required when conventional gravity drainage won't work — typically on sites with clay-heavy soils, shallow depth to bedrock, high seasonal water tables, or limited available drain field area. Tennessee's TDEC requires LPP systems on sites that fail conventional perc testing. They cost more upfront but open up many sites that would otherwise be impossible to build on.

What's the difference in maintenance between conventional and LPP systems?

Conventional systems are largely maintenance-free aside from pumping the septic tank every 3–5 years. LPP systems require all the same tank pumping, plus annual inspection of the pump, float switches, and controls. The pump itself typically lasts 7–10 years before needing replacement. Despite the added maintenance, an LPP system properly maintained will last for decades.

Can a conventional system be converted to LPP later?
