The soil profile, drainage patterns, and regulatory requirements differ meaningfully between the two counties — and getting a pond built right here means understanding both. The biggest variable in any pond project in this part of Middle Tennessee is clay content. The Maury County side of Spring Hill — particularly the areas south and west of Saturn Parkway toward Columbia — sits on heavy Davidson clay and Maury silt loam soils that hold water exceptionally well. These are some of the best soils in the state for building a self-sealing farm pond. A properly sized basin in Maury County clay can hold water with minimal or no liner intervention. On the Williamson County side of Spring Hill — toward Thompsons Station and the areas east of I-65 — soils tend to be thinner and more variable, with more gravel and fractured rock in the subsoil. Those conditions require a more careful look at permeability during site evaluation before you commit to a pond location.

Every pond we build starts with a site walk focused on three things: drainage area (how much runoff will feed the pond), soil permeability (will it hold water), and outlet management (how to safely handle overflow without eroding your dam). Spring Hill's rapid residential growth has changed drainage patterns in many areas — what used to be a naturally low draw collecting runoff from 20 acres of pasture may now have a subdivision upstream. Excavation is typically completed with our CAT 313 excavator. We shape the basin, cut the emergency spillway, compact the dam embankment in lifts, and leave the site graded and ready for seeding.
